Former President Pranab Mukherjee asserted that while the Congress had “undoubtably shrunk” electorally, the situation was not “irretrievable.”
In an interview to The Hindu , Mr. Mukherjee said his prescription for the revival of Congress’s fortunes was “to understand why people support you.”
“Secondly, what has happened in between is that people have lost confidence and withdrawn their support from you. This is not the grammar of ABCD, it is about living persons, naturally you will have to respond to their aspirations. The Congress has that capacity, resilience to change, to adapt, to adjust and also to rejuvenate. It has happened in the past and may happen in future too.”
He also looked back at his tenure as Finance Minister and as President.
“It [demonetisation] was a step taken to unearth black money. At that point of time I supported it as I was President and it was my government,” Mr. Mukherjee said.
