The All India Muslim Personal Law Board's aamilah (working committee) has launched an investigation into Board member Maulana Salman Nadwi meeting Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to discuss an out of court settlement of the Ayodhya dispute case and coming out with statements
An aamilah member, who did not wish to be identified, told The Hindu that the decision was taken after an argument between other Board members and Maulana Nadwi late on Friday night.
“The investigating committee will comprise president Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadwi, general secretary Maulana Wali Rahmani, secretary Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani and aamilah member Maulana Arshad Madani. It is difficult to say when the report will be presented. The members have to talk to Maulana Nadwi as well,” the aamilah member said, adding that the aamilah consultations are closed-door events .
Heated exchange of words
Sources close to the aamilah said that as soon as Maulana Nadwi entered the venue, members began to express their displeasure at his meeting with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The sources added that while a large number of senior Board members remained silent, there was a heated exchange between Maulana Nadwi and other aamilah members.
“They were harsh with Maulana Nadwi. But he was vehement and stood his ground, claiming that he is working in the interest of the Muslim community,” the sources said.
While clarifying that no impeachment motion has been moved against Maulana Nadwi, a senior Board member expressed his doubts about the removal of the cleric.
On Friday, Board secretary Maulana Rahmani clarified that the cleric had met the Art of Living founder in his personal capacity. “The Board has nothing to do with this meeting,” he said.
