A West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team questioned Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly on Saturday in relation to the child trafficking case in north Bengal, which was unearthed by the CID last year.
The CID team went to the MP’s south Kolkata house to question her about her alleged meeting with the arrested former general secretary of the party’s women’s wing Juhi Chowdhury, a key accused in the case. Ms. Ganguly has denied any involvement in the case and has termed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government action in this regard as “political vendetta”.
‘Inconsistent answers’
“Our team went to Ms. Ganguly’s city residence for questioning. We are not satisfied with her answers as there were several inconsistencies. We will question her again,” a senior CID official told The Hindu .
However, Ms. Ganguly later told journalists that the “CID has found nothing against me. They wanted some information from me to solve the case.” She also said that she would “cooperate” in the investigation and claimed that Ms. Chowdhury was “innocent”.
Apart from Ms. Ganguly, the CID has also summoned BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, the BJP’s former women’s wing general secretary, the chief adoption officer of a children’s home in north Bengal, its chairperson Chandana Chakraborty, and her brother Manas Bhaumik, in relation to the child trafficking case.
