The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday said it has sought sanction from the Central government to prosecute former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in the INX Media case.

When contacted, Mr. Chidambaram said: “I don’t comment to media on pending cases.”

The agency had earlier examined him in connection with the case. He had refuted all the charges, arguing that his name did not even figure in the FIR.

In February 2018, the CBI had arrested Mr. Chidambaram’s son, Karti, on the charge of demanding and accepting $1 million for scuttling a possible probe against INX Media for purported violation of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) conditions in 2007. The then directors of INX Media, Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, have been named as accused in the case.
