The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday (September 2, 2024) arrested four people, including former principal of the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh, in connection allegations of corruption at the health facility where a female doctor was raped and murdered on August 9.
The others arrested are vendors Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara and Afsar Ali, security officer to Mr. Ghosh.
The arrest comes after 15 days of continuous interrogation by the CBI, which began on August 16.
The Kolkata Police had registered an FIR against Mr. Ghosh under Sections 420 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Later, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI.
The former principal has been at the centre of the controversy with protesting resident doctors and former colleagues raising allegations of corruption against him.
Questions have also been raised as to why the hospital authorities had called the victim’s family and tried to pass her death as suicide.
‘Moral victory’
The resident doctors who held a march to the Lalbazar police headquarters on Monday hailed the arrest as a “moral victory”.
Aniket Mahato, a protesting resident doctor, said, “We are looking at this as a moral victory. We thank all the people who have supported us through these days.”
The Kolkata Police had earlier arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer, in connection with the rape and murder hours after the crime came to the fore.
