By-elections announced for Lok Sabha, Assembly seats

The Election Commission on Thursday announced by-elections to fill vacancies for one Lok Sabha and 11 Assembly seats in six States, and one Legislative Council seat in Jammu and Kashmir Council.

The model code of conduct has come into effect immediately in the concerned constituencies.

While the by-poll for the Lok Sabha/Assembly seats will be held on March 18, the Council poll is due on March 22. The counting of votes for the LS/Assembly seats will be taken up on March 21 and that for the one Council seat in J&K on March 22 at 3 p.m.

Polls will be held for Udupi Chikmagalur Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka, which fell vacant following the resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who was elected from the seat earlier, after becoming the Chief Minister.

The Assembly seats going to the polls are: Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Kovur, Ghanpur (Station) (SC), Kollapur, Adilabad, Kamareddyj (all in Andhra Pradesh), Mansa (Gujarat), Piravom (Kerala), Sankarankovil (SC) (Tamil Nadu) and Athgarh (Odisha).

The notification for LS/Assembly poll will be issued on February 22 and the last date for filing nomination is February 29. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 3.

In J&K, where the seat fell vacant following the death of MLC Yashpal Khajuria, elected from Jammu, the poll notification will be issued on March 6 and March 12 is the last date for filing nomination. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 15.
