Brahmaputra Board to be revived

February 12, 2015 03:35 am | Updated 03:35 am IST - NEW DELHI

Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharati announced on Wednesday that the Brahmaputra Board would be revived with a new mandate and schemes. This was decided after a meeting of the review board of the Brahmaputra Board in Shillong.

An official release said Northeastern States could put forth suggestions to make the board more efficient, and Ms. Bharti said a new approach was needed. The Ministry had the same focus on the Brahmaputra as it had on the Ganga. A decision was taken to constitute a committee for suggesting measures to revive the board.

Ms. Bharti called for fast-tracking development in the region and suggested that the share of funds between the region and the Union government be in the ratio of 90:10 and not 70:30.
