The Bharatiya Janata Party leadership on Saturday approved the name of four-time MLA Jai Ram Thakur as the party’s candidate for the Lok Sabha by-election from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

The seat fell vacant after Virbhadra Singh resigned to contest the Assembly polls. A former ABVP activist, Mr. Thakur is the sitting MLA from Seraj constituency in Mandi district. He had also remained as the most non-controversial and acceptable party president from 2007 to 2009.
