BJP candidate threatens to kill self over Bill

Sanbor Shullai, the BJP candidate from the Shillong Lok Sabha constituency in Meghalaya, has said he would rather “kill myself” in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi than let the party pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Mr. Shullai is the BJP MLA from South Shillong.

“I was the first BJP legislator to go to Delhi to oppose the Bill. I cannot let the Bill be implemented as long as I am alive. I would rather commit suicide before Narendra Modi but I will not allow this Bill,” he said, after casting his vote on Thursday.

Mr. Shullai said he had time and again asked the BJP leadership to exempt the northeastern region from the purview of the Bill, which the party has promised to pass if it returns to power at the Centre.
