Leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party approached the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) on Thursday seeking swift action against those who attacked a Dalit and harassed his wife at Bagga village in Majithia in April.

SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia and BJP leader Vineet Joshi met NCSC Director Raj Kumar here and complained against the authorities for failing to arrest those accused of beating and stripping a Dalit as well as outraging the modesty of his wife.

Mr. Majithia said it had been 15 days since the victims submitted a complaint to the NCSC.

“No arrests have been made yet. People who committed the crime are roaming free and are even threatening the victims. A concerted effort is being made to protect the criminals as well as the police personnel, who aided the accused in committing the atrocities,” he alleged.

Mr. Majithia said he had requested the NCSC to depute Chandigarh police personnel or those from any Central agency to guard the victim’s family.

“The family members are unable to return home due to continued threats from the accused,” he alleged.

“In case the victims do not get quick justice, they will approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court,” he said.
