In yet another shocking incident of female infanticide in Beed district of Maharashtra, a father drowned his 20-day-old daughter in a water tub at home.

The accused, identified as Momin Illyas, alias Abdul Mateen, 35, was so upset with the idea of his second child being a girl, that he drowned her on Saturday morning, the Beed police said.

Mateen himself showed his wife Nazrana Bi, alias Fatima Bi, the body of the drowned baby. Nazrana then filed a complaint with the police.

“Mateen’s wife was in the bathroom in the morning, when the father took the baby and drowned her in a half-full plastic tub. When she came out of the bathroom, she had a dizzy spell as she was weak. She was taken to her mother’s place nearby. She then asked for her baby. Someone went home to fetch the baby, but she couldn’t be found. Nazrana then called her husband, who himself produced the lifeless body of her daughter to his wife,” Sanjay Lokre, assistant police inspector, told The Hindu on the phone.

A case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered, and Mateen is under arrest.
