Advani had said that conditions that could give rise to another Emergency continued to prevail in India.

Former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani has condemned the attack on his erstwhile aide Sudheendra Kulkarni, allegedly by activists of NDA ally Shiv Sena in Mumbai.

Mr. Kulkarni had organised an event to release former Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri’s book “Neither a Hawk, Nor a Dove: An Insider Account of Pakistan’s Foreign Policy” on Monday.

“I strongly condemn whosoever has done this,” said Mr. Advani. “Of late, we have seen an increase in cases of intolerance. This is against democracy.”

Significantly, Mr. Advani had, on the 40th anniversary of the Emergency in June, said that conditions that could give rise to another Emergency continued to prevail in India.

Mr. Kulkarni, Chairman of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), the think-tank and organiser of the book launch show, has had a colourful history from a columnist for Blitz in Mumbai to a close aide of former Prime Minister Vajpayee.

The attack on Mr. Kulkarni attracted all-round condemnation from political parties as well. Congress spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said it was the “manifestation of the larger malice of intolerance and suppression of voices at whim’ which was increasingly being witnessed in the country ever since the Modi government came to power 16 months ago.

‘Indian Taliban’

The Aam Aadmi Party termed the Shiv Sena “the Indian Taliban.”

“After Ghulam Ali, it is Sudheendra Kulkarni,” said party leader Dr. Kumar Vishwas, a poet himself. “Interestingly, he belongs to the BJP and is known to be a close aide of L.K. Advani. If the BJP cannot even protect its own people, there is little hope that they can safeguard the lives of [ordinary] citizens.”
