Police personnel inspect the site after a helicopter of the Indian Army crashed near Ranjit Sagar Dam Lake in Kathua district, Tuesday, Aug 3, 2021.

An Army helicopter with its pilot and co-pilot on Tuesday crashed into the Ranjit Sagar Dam in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Official sources said the advanced light helicopter took off from Pathankot’s Mamun Cantonment around 10:20 a.m. and crashed into the dam, around 30 km away from the Cantonment.

“Specialised divers of the National Disaster Relief Force were looking for the two pilots,” officials said.

The officials did not divulge the cause of the crash. However, preliminary reports suggested that the helicopter developed a snag after it took off and was flying low. “Some of the floating material of the chopper have been recovered,” the police said.

In January last, the pilot died after an Army helicopter crashed in Kathua district’s Lakhanpur.
