In a bid to cash in on his living legacy, veteran activist Anna Hazare is all set to auction his “historic” sports utility vehicle (SUV) in which he has campaigned extensively during his anti-corruption agitations, most notably during the nationwide Jan Lokpal movement in 2011.
The SUV is owned by Mr. Hazare’s Trust, the Swami Vivekananda Krutudnata Nidhi, set up to manage funds received by the 77-year-old activist from awards.
Back ache during travelAccording to Mr. Hazare’s aide, Datta Awari, septuagenarian campaigner has been suffering from back pain aggravated by extensive travelling. “We have yet to fix a base price. The Trust will buy a new vehicle depending on the proceeds from the auction ,” said Mr. Awari.
The auction is due to take place this Sunday.
A statement from the Mr Hazare’s office said the vehicle has been witness to many a historic battle fought by Mr. Hazare in the last eight years including his agitations against tainted ministers in 2007 and campaigning against multicrore scams in Maharashtra’s cooperative banks.
In 2011, the vehicle was attacked by Congress workers in Nagpur when Mr. Hazare commenced his anti-corruption movement, says the statement.
