Public anger against the present Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) government was rising at a rapid pace due to its wrong economic policies and the rise of communal forces, said Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury here on Saturday.
The impact of wrong economic policies, communal polarisation and attacks on Constitutional bodies has begun to be felt across the country, said Mr. Yechury, addressing a seminar organised by the CPI (M). “The number of farmer suicides is rising. In the last three years, the figure [of farmer suicides] has touched 60,000. The BJP-led government had promised to fix minimum support price of farm products at 1.5 times of input cost. They did not keep their promise,” he said.
“There has been a growing demand to waive farm loan amounting to ₹1,20,000 crore. Instead of listening to farmers, the government has written off loans to the tune of ₹2,64,000 crore taken by big corporate houses. The government has resorted to economic exploitation,” said the Left leader.
Flipkart deal
Expressing concerns over the $ 16 billion acquisition of Indian e-retail brand Flipkart by international e-commerce retail giant Walmart, he said the Narendra Modi government was facilitating the entry of foreign capital via the e-commerce route.
Demonetisation and the implementation of GST (Goods and Services Tax) has broken the backbone of traders and small-scale industries, Mr. Yechury said.
The CPI-M general secretary called upon non-BJP parties to support the “people’s movement against dangerous policies of the present-day government.”
