The Anantapur Municipal Council (AMC) on Monday unanimously ratified a proposal for taking up projects under the Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP) scheme with an investment of ₹120 crore in the city and send proposals to the State government.
The general body meeting of the AMC was, however, not smooth as the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) corporators demanded a discussion on sanitary conditions here and labour-related issues in the department concerned with solid waste management. The corporators said the issues merited discussion as outsourced sanitation staff had gone on a 12-day strike recently that had led to the deterioration of sanitation in the city.
The YSRCP members said they would cooperate with Mayor Madamanchi Swaroopa and pass all the listed items if she allowed the discussion. But, their demand was rejected by Ms. Swaroopa, who took up only items listed on the agenda.
Bandying words
With their demand unmet, the corporators bandied words with TDP corporators as they spoke on agenda items, and sat in front of the Mayor’s podium. They later staged a walkout and boycotted the meeting.
After the listed proposals were passed unanimously, the Mayor asked the YSRCP corporators to return to the council to discuss sanitation, but they refused to take part in the discussions. Ms. Swaroopa said the YSRCP corporators were following their party president, who never attended Assembly sessions. “If you do not attend the council meeting, how do we discuss people’s problems?” she asked them.
