YSRC seeks rollback of RTC fare hike

October 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - HYDERABAD/VIZIANAGARAM/KURNOOL:

YSR Congress party on Monday demanded that the State government roll back the hike in bus charges and accused Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of going back on his word.

Party spokesperson Tammineni Seetharam claimed that the dharna in front of RTC bus depots across the State by YSR Congress activists received full support from youth, students and others. It was time for the TDP government to roll back the hike, he added.

Stating that the increase has cast an additional burden on the common man, he alleged that Mr. Naidu went ahead with the decision although the cabinet sub-committee and officials had suggested against it and wanted steps to be taken to curtail losses.

Mr. Seetharam said that Mr. Naidu had assured the people during electioneering that there would be no new taxes and hike in the charges for the next five years, but went back on his word. The decision of the TDP government to increase bus fares even when crude oil prices fell drastically worldwide was beyond any reasonable comprehension, he added.

YSRC cadre and former municipal councillors, led by the party central committee member P. Sambasiva Raju and MLC Veerabhadra Swamy, on Monday staged protest at the RTC Complex at Vizianagaram against the bus fare hike and demanded roll back. Condemning the fare hike, Mr. Swamy said: “It is unfortunate that the state government chose to hike fares at a time when fuel prices in the international market were decreasing.” Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Depot Manager.

In Kurnool, YSRC activists staged a dharna at the APSRTC regional manager office on Kurnool bus stand premises on Monday deploring the steep hike in RTC bus fares and demanded that the government roll back the hike.

YSRC city convenor Narasimha Yadav and activists Ramana, P. Jacob, Jahir Ahmed Khan, Satyaraju, Chandra Reddy, Sarveswar Reddy, Adimohan Reddy, Yesanna, Gopinath, Narayanamma and Salomi participated.

Rayalaseema Janata Party president K. Satyanarayana Gupta and Dalit leaders K. Srinivasulu, Tyagaraju, Venkateswarlu and Vijayakumar conducted a demonstration at the Gandhi statue in front of the Kurnool Collectorate on Monday demanding rollback of RTC fare hike. They wanted the backward Rayalaseema region exempted from the fare hike.
