Accident-prone stretch remedial report awaited

March 19, 2015 05:23 pm | Updated 05:24 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Two months after the District Collector sought a report on the measures to check accidents on the Yenamalakuduru-Avanigadda stretch, the officials of Transport and Irrigation departments are yet to submit their findings as also the remedial measures.

Quite a few accidents including death of four persons of a marriage party were reported when the car in which they were travelling plunged into Krishna canal at Royyuru village on the Yenamalakuduru-Avanigadda stretch. The 70-km stretch from Yenamalakuduru to Avanigadda, popularly known as Karakatta Road, is an accident prone route.

With the vehicular traffic increasing significantly on the Bandar road, many motorists heading towards Avanigadda tend to drive along this stretch as it reduces distance and time.

Following frequent accidents at Vuyyuru and Pulipaka on the stretch, district Collector Babu. A, during the last road safety meeting, instructed officials of transport and irrigation departments to conduct a survey and submit a report. They were also asked to prepare estimates for remedial measures to be taken up for controlling accidents on the stretch.

During the survey, a team of officials from transport, traffic and irrigation departments identified more than 10 vulnerable spots on the stretch. Accordingly, officials emphasised on the need to establish glow sign boards, proper illumination, iron fencing on either sides of the canal bund at few locations, etc.

As a precautionary measure, they wanted to install sign boards at village entry points on the stretch, iron fencing at few places, especially on the sharp curves to ensure safety of road users. Lack of such road safety facilities was posing a risk for motorists driving on the stretch, especially during nights.

A senior official from Irrigation Department said the Transport department had submitted its report and estimates were being prepared for taking up remedial measures. “In a couple of days, a comprehensive report and estimates would be submitted to higher authorities and District Collector,” he assured.
