Top women officers from across the world will converge in the city for the first ever three-day conference on ‘International women in law enforcement’ at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, starting Tuesday. The conference that will be attended by 120 women delegates, out of which 48 are foreign and over 70 from different States in the country, will focus on the leadership role of women in areas including counter-terrorism, de-radicalisation, cyber threats and crime against women.
The police academy that is now headed by its first female director, Aruna Bahuguna, will organise the conference in collaboration with Charles Sturt University, Australia. The event is expected to start discussion on best practices from across the participant countries. It will also facilitate peer group interaction and networking among the top female leadership of the police force.
Speaking at a media conference here on Monday, Ms. Bahuguna said though policing is considered to be a male field, empirical studies the world over have stressed that women humanise the police force by “bringing greater emotional intelligence to the police work, reducing the use of force and de-escalating violence in police-public interactions.” The main topics of deliberation and discussion will be women in leadership roles, the influence of women in international police cooperation and the role of the media in the empowerment of women in law enforcement, among others..
