The State government scaled up its support to Rs.11,000 per each toilet and with the Centre complementing it by Rs.4,000, the financial assistance rose to Rs.15,000 for individual toilet.

A silent revolution is sweeping across urban slums in Guntur as women have taken a lead in building Individual Household Latrines (IHHL). For years, the women have endured shame and fear as they ventured outside their homes after dark. Given that their family incomes are hardly sufficient, they had never thought of a toilet.

But all that changed after the Guntur Municipal Corporation took up the task of building IHHLs in the slums. But convincing the families was not an easy task as they had their doubts over the financial support from the government agencies. Meanwhile, the State government scaled up its support to Rs.11,000 per each toilet and with the Centre complementing it by Rs.4,000, the financial assistance rose to Rs.15,000 for individual toilet, Rs.65,000 for community toilet.

“We have been living in Swarna Bharathi Colony for the last 30 years. My husband works as an agricultural worker and we have three children. We have constructed a toilet and have been using for the last 20 days.

Our children used to suffer in rainy season and since the area is filled with slush and mud, they used to get infectious diseases,” said Badugu Tirupathamma .

The Guntur Municipal Corporation conducted a door-to-door survey in August and identified that 7,250 houses do not have toilets. Colonies in Toofan Nagar, Swarna Bharathi Colony, ST Colony in Gorantla had no toilets forcing the residents to venture out. In the biggest slum at Swarna Bharathi Nagar, 700 houses have been identified. Each house was geo tagged and the beneficiary details have been uploaded in the Swachh Bharat website.
