A 78-year-old woman was charred to death after sparks emanated from an electric switch board at her residence in Ramnagar Colony in Chittoor on Tuesday evening.

The II-Town Police said the woman, who hails from Proddatur in Kadapa district, was suffering from cancer and other health complications for the last seven years, and was bedridden after she moved to live with her daughter and son-in-law here. She was alone at home as her daughter and son-in-law were at work.

“It seems the woman tried to switch on the fan using a stick. This might have resulted in sparks coming from switch board due to loose contact, which fell on her and her cot burning them down,” Circle Inspector Yugandhar said, adding that the family members too had said that the switchboard was faulty with frequent sparks emanating from it.

The woman was charred to death instantaneously, police said.
