A waste-to-energy plant in each of the 13 districts in the State would be established in the next one-and-a-half years, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday.
During a review meeting on Swachha Bharath, he said the State should be a role model in waste management and environment protection. He said waste-to-energy plants would be set up in the State on the lines of the one he had visited in Delhi recently. Representatives from Tata, ILFS and AECOM (an energy company) made presentations on different technologies at the meeting. He said 9,000 tonnes of solid and liquid waste per day was being generated in the 13 districts and by re-using it energy would be produced. He said the waste from different mandal centres would be transported to the town where a waste-to-energy plant would be set up in each district. He said vermi-culture plants would also be established.
Expressing his concern over growing accumulation of waste, he said 10,000 tonnes of waste per day was being generated in Delhi and 4,000 tonnes in Benguluru.
He said due to failure of policies in the last 10 years and use of proper technology, environmental problems have increased. He said there was a need to implement proper policies.
Mr. Naidu, who is convenor of the Chief Ministers Committee on Swachh Bharath, said his focus was on successfully implementing waste management technology in the State before suggesting the same to others.
