Following heavy rain for the last three days and overflowing of drains, Municipal Commissioner Pravin Kumar has asked Visakhapatnam Port Trust officials to clear drains and storm water drains in the port area on a war-footing and rid them of plastic waste.
The Commissioner visited Chavulamadum railway underpass, some yards in the port trust, VPT new flyover, railway culvert, and port trust canals and found them clogged with plastic waste.
He was accompanied by VPT Chief Engineer K. Jnana Sundaram and Executive Engineer Ch. Srinivas.
Regular de-silting would have prevented the flooding, the Commissioner said.
Mr. Jnana Sundaram said de-silting and removal of plastic waste had been done to some extent but needed to be taken up in a full-fledged manner.
Mr. Pravin Kumar, who also visited the blocked drain at Ramakrishna Beach, said de-silting of Gungulagedd, Yerrigedda, and other drains had been taken up under summer and monsoon action plan, and the situation was much better than earlier.
Normalcy was restored at Chavulamadum and Novotel hotel after Saturday night’s rain. He instructed officials to take up de-silting of the remaining drains and storm water drains.
