‘Ready to Vote, a campaign launched by the district adminstration to create awareness on voting right on Friday caught the attention of many as 8,320 youth and 150 differently abled persons took part in the event.

The event organised at Srikakulam Government Degree College marking the National Voters’ Day was aimed at making the new voters to participate in the democratic process of exercising their franchise. The youngsters, a majority of them college-goers, formed a human chain in the shape of ‘Ready to Vote’ and took a pledge that they would participate in the electoral process, apart from creating awareness to achieve 100% turnout in their respective residential areas during elections.

The differently abled persons who were in wheel chairs made a formation of the logo of the Election Commission of India.

Around 9,000 people sang the State anthem ‘Maa Telgu Talliki Mallepudanda’ in unison which was being considered to be another record.

Particpating in the programme, Srikakulam MP K. Rammohan Naidu and ZP Chairperson Chowdary Dhanalakshmi appreciated the officials for organising the programme. “We organised the event in the backdrop of this year’s theme ‘Inclusive Elections and No Voter to be Left Behind’. The Election Commission will ensure basic amenities at 2906 polling booths in the coming elections,” Collector K. Dhananjaya Reddy and Joint Collector K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu said.

Bid to enter record books

According to him, the representatives of Limca Book of Records, Genius Book of Records, Platinum Book of Records and other organisations attended the event and agreed to consider it as a new record.

Gurudeva Charitable Trust founder Raparthi Jagadish Babu who supplied wheel chairs lauded the Election Commission of India’s directive for creation of ramp, hand rail and other facilities at all polling booths for differently abled persons. “Many a time, physically challenged persons are unable to come to polling booths for lack of the required facilities. But this time, all of them would participate in the polls. We are thankful to the Srikakulam district administration for displaying EC’s logo with their support,” he added.

Joint Collector-II P. Rajanikanta Rao, RDO M.V.Ramana, District Sports Development Officer B. Srinivasa Kumar and others were present.
