A youth from the city, N. Sumedh (27), who was doing MS in rotobics in Oregon State University, U.S., died after he drowned in the Crater Lake, the Oregon police informed his family on Tuesday.
The youth reportedly jumped from a height of seven metres from a rock cliff known as Jumping Rock, said Crater Lake National Park spokeswoman Marsha McCabe.
Jumping Rock is a popular recreation area in the park, and it is not a prohibited area.
‘Bright student’
The news came as a big blow to his family here.
His father M.S. Kumar, a senior executive in the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) and former Andhra Pradesh Ranji cricketer, told The Hindu that Sumedh was a very bright student and had wanted to become an international expert in robotics.
Sumedh, who had graduated from NIT-Warangal, had worked in Samsung in Bengaluru. The company had applied for patent for three of his innovations. Before going to the U.S., he had undertaken a project in the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, for a year. He was scheduled to complete his MS in June 2020.
The incident took place at 4.40 p.m. on Sunday, Crater Lake National Park authorities said.
The police traced the body in the early hours of Tuesday and informed the family.
Sumedh’s relatives in the U.S., with the assistance of the Indian Consulate, were trying to send the body to Visakhapatnam by Saturday or Sunday, after completing all the formalities.
