They returned to their native on May 7 and sought police protection. Police summoned the parents of both sides and sent the couple to the boy’s house. However, the community elders, who held a panchayat on Tuesday, warned the boy of severe consequences for marrying the girl . They expressed anger over the bridegroom’s family members for not following their diktat.
When the panchayat was on, a group of villagers caught hold of the bride and thrashed her before whisking her away. Following a complaint lodged by her husband, the police registered a case. SI A. Mani Kumar said a case under Section 365 of the IPC (kidnap) was registered against seven persons.
