In a filmy style, a group of villagers allegedly kidnapped a bride during a panchayat at Pulaparru in Krishna district.

The villagers attacked the newly married woman for not following the community elders’ diktat. Police rushed to the spot and booked cases against seven persons, including the bride’s parents and village heads.

According to sources, M. Ashamani of Pulaparru had fallen in love with M. Kranthi of the same village, and they married in East Godavari district on April 29. They returned to their native on May 7 and sought police protection. Police summoned the parents of both sides and sent the couple to the boy’s house. However, the community elders, who held a panchayat on Tuesday, warned the boy of severe consequences for marrying the girl . They expressed anger over the bridegroom’s family members for not following their diktat.

When the panchayat was on, a group of villagers caught hold of the bride and thrashed her before whisking her away. Following a complaint lodged by her husband, the police registered a case. SI A. Mani Kumar said a case under Section 365 of the IPC (kidnap) was registered against seven persons.
