A day after the Telangana government issued a GO notifying re-assignment of registrations numbers of 74 lakh non-transport vehicles in the 10 districts of Telangana, officials are clueless on how to go about the exercise in a manner that was hassle-free to the public.
Thursday’s notification stated that the registration numbers of vehicles registered in Telangana prior to June 2 last would be changed and threw up several questions.
Since the notification was issued, senior officials are grappling with the logistics of how to effectively handle the mammoth exercise.
The notification kicked up a hornet’s nest with several questions being thrown up, ranging from how the new numbers would change and what are the other details of the process.
It said a reasonable time, not less than four months, would be provided, but even if the timeframe were extended, the scale of transactions that would have to be done at the 49 Road Transport Authority across the State is huge. Interestingly, there are a whopping 400 vacancies of the current sanctioned strength of about 1,440.
As if the inadequate staff was not enough, a significant challenge is posed by the contracted company that supplies the High Security Registration Plates. Currently, it is said that on an average day, the contractor is not delivering even a 1,000 or 2,000 plates.
The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation is the nodal agency that oversees the implementing the HSRP programme and is also working on the issue.
However, the final nod too will be dicey, considering that the decision to re-assign vehicle numbers involves such a large section of the population.
The government has to also take into account that there is some anger and consternation among the public over the ‘irritating’ business of doing the rounds of RTA offices, all over again.
