The Tirupati police nabbed two women accused of thefts at public places such as choultries, bus and railway stations, while they were moving suspiciously towards the Madhavam guest house of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in Tirupati on Saturday.
₹8.73 lakh in cash, gold ornaments weighing 286 grams and a mobile phone were recovered from them.
Acting on a tip-off and as instructed by Tirupati Urban Superintendent of Poilce (SP) Anbhurajan, a special team was formed to nab the accused, involved in lifting bags and purses of pilgrims and commuters at the busy places. Identified as B. Venkata Ramanamma alias Samudrala Sangeetha (22) and Peetla Anitha (19) of Siddapuram village of Atmakuru mandal of Kurnool district, the duo were wanted in four cases of theft in Tirumala, Tirupati, Kadapa and Hyderabad. Their modus operandi has been to mingle with the crowd to steal bags.
The duo were produced before a Tirupati court and remanded in custody.
