An international human rights watchdog has expressed concern over a recent AP High court judgment pertaining to Dalit deaths.
In its 2015 annual report released on January 29, Thursday, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) has compiled various incidents that had taken place in 2014 which portray the treatment meted out to minorities in India. In this category, the report concluded that Dalits and tribal people continued to face injustice and pointed out some court judgements to back their claim.
“Dalits (so-called Untouchables) and tribal groups continued to face discrimination and violence. The difficulties the Dalit community has in obtaining justice were highlighted by recent court verdicts in four cases in Bihar and one in A. P. In each of the cases, the courts overturned convictions in high-profile incidents that took place between 1991 and 2000 involving killings of Dalits due to lack of evidence, highlighting the failure of prosecutorial authorities.” Civil society members condemned the verdict and started a movement to demanding justice to the victims. The case is presently pending in the Supreme Court.
