Tobacco auction begins on SBS platforms

e-auction of tobacco began on five platforms in Prakasam district on Monday.

Farmers were offered a maximum of Rs 123 per kg and a minimum of Rs 115 per kg by traders on the opening day of auctions on the platforms of Ongole II, Vellampalli I and II and Tangutur I and II covering the crop in southern black soil (SBS), Tobacco Board Regional Manager G.Bhaskar Reddy said.

On the eight southern light soil platforms, over one lakh kg of tobacco was traded in the last one week. Farmers got an average price of Rs 122 per kg with major players including ITC, GPI, Alliance One and Indian Tobacco Traders entering the market.

Unhappy with the price offered by the traders, Virginia Tobacco Growers Welfare Association secretary Ch. Seshaiah said the farmers would be able to break even only if traders offered an average price of Rs 145 for bright grade tobacco.

The Centre should allow foreign direct investment in the tobacco sector to turn the Indian market into a definite market so that the farmers got a remunerative price for their produce, said Tobacco Board former member Ch.Ranga Rao.
