Tirumala temple: first ever to adopt technology to meet pilgrim needs

The temple of Lord Venkateswars which is known for its abounding riches is also credited with the rare honour of being the first ever temple in the country to have espoused 'e-governance' in meeting the requirements of the thronging public.

The wishful followers of the richest temple on the planet can meet all requirements relating to their pilgrimage to the sacred town at the click of the mouse. Besides the darshan and accommodation that form the core part of the pilgrimage the devotees also can get their laddu requirements met at a click of button on their electronic devices.

Having tasted success in the field of meeting the basic needs of the pilgrim the temple management later extended the usage of technology to other pilgrim-oriented sectors besides applying it in its day-to-day administration on a massive scale.

Any devotee sitting pretty comfortably at his house in any corner of the globe can now make his offerings by way of 'e-hundi', munificently donate to various endowments schemes like Pranadanam, Annadanam, Orphanage, Go-Samrakshana and like by way of 'e-contributions' and flowers for use inside the temple by way of 'e-flowers' to mention a few.

The travel of the TTD – the sole manager of the illustrious temple on the path of technology was not that cushy. The abrasive journey which took-off with the introduction of 'Sudarshan' token system in the late nineties almost consumed eighteen long years for the institution to achieve the present standards wherein a visiting devotee can avail all the amenities accessing the web. Efforts are also on to enable the devout avail the facilities over their mobile phones which is expected to a reality in next couple of months.

The espousal of technology also had resulted in several positive fallouts. The serpentine queue lines that once stood synonymous to Balaji darshan have become a thing of the past. Pilgrims availing the darshan tickets on line can comfortably reach the town at the pre-designated time and complete their darshan in a couple of hours even on the days of heavy crowds. They no longer need to hover around the reception officials for their accommodation or approach the black marketeers for the laddus.

For the benefit of those who cannot avail the facilities on line the management has made it available at selected post offices and its 'e-darshan' counters spread in different parts of the country. In addition to this, the management is also periodically releasing in-bulk thousands of arjitha seva tickets every month including those of the pre-dawn sevas that have a great demand among the pilgrim fraternity.

Buoyed with the productive results in various disciplines the management is now contemplating applying the same (technology) to its Srivari seva. Volunteers can hitherto reserve the slots of their choice on their preferred days for extending service at Tirumala by accessing the web if the recent directive by the TTD EO D. Sambasiva Rao to the personnel of information technology wing as well as TCS to develop an application for the on line enrolment is of any indication.



Besides darshan and accommodation, devotees can get prasadam at the click of a button
