Thousands of tenant farmers denied loans

Of 6,600 farmers, 1,200 receive loans

November 19, 2011 03:35 pm | Updated 03:35 pm IST - SANGAREDDY:

Despite an assurance from the State government, the tenant farmers across the State including those from Medak district, have not received loans to the expected level.

Assurance given

The district administration, including Collector S. Suresh, had time and again announced that around 6,600 tenant farmers were registered in the district and all of them would be offered loans as assured by the government.

But contrary to that only 1,200 farmers had received loans from the banks.

Reasons

The reasons being mentioned by bankers include tenant farmer not living locally for longer period, land owner already availing loan and had not yet paid back the amount to the bank, land landlord raising objections to give loan to tenant farmer on the guaranty of his land.

Collateral asked

The other complaint received at many places from farmers was that bankers were demanding some collateral before sanctioning the loan.

Though officials had refuted this allegation, the leaders of the farmers' association claimed that this situation was prevailing across the district without exception.

‘Less than one lakh'

“All the farmers who had availed loans took less than Rs.1 lakh and it is free of interest. However, due to various reasons the banks failed to extend loans to all those farmers who applied for it,” admitted Mr. Chandrasekhar, Joint Director, Agriculture.
