The Tadepalli police on November 4 seized about ten tonnes of suspected beef being smuggled in a container van from Odisha to Chennai. The vehicle’s driver and cleaner were taken into custody.
Police alerted veterinary department officials to ascertain whether the seized meat was beef or of any wild animal. Samples have been sent to the lab, said Guntur Urban Superintendent of Police P.H.D. Ramakrishna.
Acting on a tip-off that beef is being transported from Andhra Odisha Border (AOB) to Tamil Nadu, the Tadepalli police intercepted the container at Kanaka Durgamma Varadhi and seized the beef.
“The vehicle driver was carrying fake documents, in which it was mentioned that fish was being transported. We are trying to find out the exact origin and destination of the beef and the details of the smugglers”, the SP told The Hindu .
A case has been registered under the Cow Slaughter Act, 2017, for smuggling banned beef, carrying fake documents and other charges.
“The meat was packed in ice in the container. We are investigating the case in all angles”, Mr. Ramakrishna said.
