TDP optimistic over MLC poll, stoic silence in YSRC camp

June 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - CHITTOOR:

Even as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) cadres are optimistic about the upcoming election to the Legislative Council seat under the local bodies quota with the announcement of the name of former Nagari MLA Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu as candidate, silence prevails in the YSR Congress camp over their candidate, in spite of having 8 MLAs out of 14 in the district.

Mr. Muddukrishnama Naidu is scheduled to file nomination at Chittoor on June 12 and his supporters are planning a massive showdown for the occasion. As many as 1,184 voters, including the members of territorial constituencies and civic bodies, will exercise their franchise during the poll.

Going by the party-wise strength, the TDP is said to have a comfortable edge over the YSRC here. The YSRC has a strength of 450 members in the constituency, according to party district president and GD Nellore MLA Kalattur Narayanaswamy, who has accused the TDP of resorting to horse-trading ahead of the poll. “Chandrababu Naidu is playing politics with his money power. We have information that he is trying to buy the voters from out party at Rs. 2 to 5 lakh each,” Mr. Narayanaswamy, adding that YSRC chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy will a take final call on the selection of the candidate.

He further said that YSRC Nagari MLA and party’s State Mahila wing president R.K. Roja, who should take the lead in candidate selection, was silent over the issue.

Meanwhile, YSRC cadres feel that if Mr. Muddukrishnama Naidu wins, it would bring a ‘tough time’ for Ms. Roja in Nagari. Ms. Roja had alleged political discrimination in developmental works in Nagari. She deplored that her representation to Collector for undertaking public works was given a cold shoulder.
