Congress in-charge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh Digvijaya Singh has told the election committee of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) that the issue of electoral alliances will be decided by the high command, even as he kept open a channel of talks with Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
A majority of party leaders suggested Mr. Singh at the meeting held here on Thursday that they were strongly opposed to electoral alliance with the TRS stating that the latter was trying to take the sole credit for the creation of Telangana . They told the high command’s envoy that the party could put up a good show by taking the issue of Telangana to the electorate.
However, Mr. Singh told them that the issue of poll alliance was not decided at the State level but the party would take a decision at the national level keeping in mind the overall interests of the party. Sources said he had assured the Telangana leaders to take their view to the high command’s notice. Though the issue of alliance was not in the meeting agenda on Thursday, it consumed over an hour’s time in the three-hour engagement. It was first raised by senior leader V. Hanumanth Rao and picked up by other leaders one by one. The meeting also discussed how best they could take the statehood issue into people to reap electoral riches. Meanwhile, TRS leader K. Keshava Rao was learnt to have spoken to Mr. Singh on the alliance proposal before the latter left for the party meeting. The meeting also witnessed heated exchanges over the inclusion of Renuka Chowdary in the election panel.
