Officials fire one round in the air to prevent stone pelting by operatives, nab two smuggling operatives.

The Red Sanders Anti Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) officials nabbed two smuggling operatives and seized 23 red sanders logs, during a combing operation in the forest areas abutting Sri Venkateswara Nagar near S.V. Zoological Park, in the early hours of Monday.

Off late, this region in Seshachalam forests has turned into a hotbed of smuggling activities and had registered several skirmishes between the operatives and task force officials. Following the regular trail on Monday, the combing party came face to face with several smuggling operatives, transporting red sanders logs to an undisclosed location.

Alarmed by this confrontation, the operatives rained stones on the combing party injuring few of the officials, including RSI Vasu who was leading the team. In a bid to stop the onslaught, the officials fired one round in the air, from a pump action weapon, as an act of self defence. Subsequently, they abandoned the logs and fled deep into the forests.

However, they managed to nab two operatives - Mani (40) and Periya Paiyan (45), the duo hailing from Polur town of Tiruvannamalai District in Tamil Nadu. The RSASTF Head and DIG M. Kantha Rao, who visited the spot to assess the situation, has mobilised additional forces to nab those who had fled into the forests.
