Little Muniraja would have totally lost his vision to glaucoma, but for the timely intervention in the form of a surgery performed by specialists at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital here recently.
For the past five years, the eleven-year-old boy hailing from Srikalahasti town had been suffering from chronic low vision in both the eyes. The situation worsened due to consultation in various hospitals, as he suffered progressive diminution of vision of up to 50%. “When he came to us, we noticed a high intraocular pressure in both eyes. There were advanced glaucomatous changes in his eyes, with irreversible loss of vision more in left eye and at a very advanced stage,” said Dr. Ravi Chandra, the glaucoma specialist who performed the surgery, to the media here on Tuesday.
“Glaucoma, caused by elevated pressure inside the eye, is a silent disease and is seen more in boys, compared to girls. Paediatric glaucoma may manifest at birth (congenital) or later in childhood (developmental), which can be treated usually with surgery. The earlier the surgery done, the better the prognosis,” observed Dr. J.S. Reddy, Medical Director of Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital.
The boy said he was feeling much better now.
