‘Summer ploughing’ to reap multiple benefits

Tech support: The large machines help plough two to three feet deep.

The rain last week in Anantapur district has prompted the A.P. Agros to promote the concept of ‘summer ploughing’ by bringing their deep ploughing equipment and organising three demonstrations.

Agricultural engineer M.C. Naresh said that while this activity was promoted on a small scale, the corporation was proposing to do it on a massive scale before kharif season so that farmers could rent the equipment and conduct this ploughing activity that is beneficial for soil conservation. The large machines help plough from 2 to 3 feet from surface, effortlessly.

The method

At a demonstration in the farmland of A Krishnaiah at Penakacherla village in Garladinne mandal, he said it would improve the soil structure due to alternate drying and cooling. Tillage would improve soil aeration and help in multiplication of beneficial micro-organisms. This was a technique to kill weeds and harmful micro-organisms, ahead of sowing groundnut in the region.

The ploughing activity is taken up in the direction perpendicular to the natural flow of water/gradient or wind flow so that soil erosion is arrested and whatever small quantum of rain received gets into the soil preserving it for the crop to be sown during khariff. Decomposition is hastened resulting in higher nutrient availability to the plants, which helps improve the yield by reducing pest infestation.

The A.P. Agros conducted such ploughing demonstration at D. Thimma Reddy’s agriculture land in Ramasagaram village and at M. Umamaheswar Naidu’s land at Ankampalli.
