Experts at The Hindu Education Plus career counselling programme on Tuesday advised engineering aspirants to stick to the core subjects and pursue new courses at a later stage.

Speaking at the session, which was conducted for the 12th consecutive year by The Hindu in association with ICFAI University, at Hotel Regalia on Tuesday, experts said students who opted for regular subjects would gain the opportunity to explore their interests before choosing a particular specialisation at the next level. “New courses and specialisations seem promising, but choosing the core subjects will teach students the nuances of engineering and make them prepared for pursuing courses at the next level,” director (Branding) of ICFAI Group Mr. Sudhakar Rao said.

He spoke about the five qualities that parents and students should be conscious of before choosing a college. “Among the plethora of educational institutions in recent times, parents and students should evaluate whether a particular institution has a proper curriculum. They should also check its background, infrastructure, placements and transparency,” he said.

The panel of experts comprised Dr. V. Prabhakaran (vice-principal of Krishna Theja College of Pharmacy), Prof. K. Nagendra Prasad (former registrar of Vikrama Simhapuri University, Nellore), K. Ravindranath (professor of mechanical engineering at Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering and Technology, Chittoor) Prof. P. Rajendra Prasad (former professor of entomology at S.V. Agricultural College, Tirupati) and Prof. H. Sudheer (ICFAI University, Hyderabad).

The experts explained the prerequisites for choosing a branch and their scope, besides urging students to focus less on placements and lay emphasis on acquiring knowledge and communication skills.
