Steps afoot to supply gas through pipelines: official

May 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - KAKINADA:

Advising the oil companies to take steps to supply liquefied gas to the domestic sector through pipelines in urban and rural areas, Additional Secretary to the Government of India (Petroleum and Natural Gas) Ajay Sawhney on Sunday said the Union government was planning to ensure 100 per cent supply of the gas to households through the pipelines in the days to come.

Addressing a meeting with representatives of oil companies after inspecting sites for the proposed Petroleum University, Mr. Sawhney said there was a need to encourage the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the industrial and transport sectors.

Mr. Sawhney wanted the representatives of Bhagyanagar Gas Company to complete the pipeline works in Kakinada, Vijayawada and Hyderabad cities at the earliest, so that the gas could be supplied on pilot basis.

He also underscored the need for creating awareness among people about the use of CNG as an alternative to petrol and diesel in the transport segment.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Sawhney inspected sites identified near the Harita Beach Resorts at Vakalapudi and in Tammavaram village on the city outskirts for the proposed Petroleum University.

District officials and representatives of various oil companies were present.
