Stand-off continues at Bapatla Agricultural College

October 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - BAPATLA:

The stand-off between the agitating students of Bapatla Agricultural College and the Acharya NG Ranga University continued on Thursday.

University Vice-Chancellor Padma Raju and Associate Dean, P.R.K Prasad said on Thursday that the varsity and college professors had been trying to convince the students to resume classes. Students have been on a strike since September 26 after a M.Sc student Surya Rao allegedly committed suicide in his room. Students alleged that a professor had humiliated Surya Rao.

The university that administers the BAC has sent letters to the parents asking them to ensure that the students attend to their classes, warning that en masse absence for a prolonged period would force the university to take disciplinary action. "We are trying to address all issues raised by students ,’’ Dr. Prasad said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, some students said they would not relent unless the college takes action against the professors who had allegedly harassed girl students. "We have told the principal that we are ready to leave the college unless the management takes action against the professors,’’ said a student. On Thursday, tense moments were witnessed when police were called in to the campus after the students pitched a tent.

The police removed the tent but the students continued to squat in front of the college.
