Sarvasreshta Tripathi, SP, on Wednesday asked the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) IIIT officials to provide foolproof security for students on the campus.

Mr. Tripathi along with Nuzvid Dy. SP V. Srinivas visited the campus and held discussions with Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandra Raju, Director V. Venkata Dasu and Administrative Officer Ramakanth.

The SP visited the classrooms, labs, dormitories and the dining halls. He observed that the lack of surveillance cameras and compound wall posed a threat to the students.

The institute’s officials told him proposals had been sent for installing 20 CCTVs and the issue was pending. Mr. Tripathi felt that 20 cameras were not sufficient to cover the vital points.

“About 8,300 students are staying on the campus, but there was no proper compound wall and anti-social elements may enter the campus. Even surveillance cameras are not installed and the security is being manned by private agency,” the police said.“We advised to step up security immediately and provide protection to the inmates. The police will take the matter to the notice of the government and extend necessary help in maintaining good atmosphere on IIIT campus,” the SP told The Hindu .

A few days ago, two students committed suicide in their hostel rooms on the campus. Six students who thrashed their juniors were debarred from the college and 48 more who were involved in the ragging incident were suspended recently.

The SP interacted with the staff and students.
