About 100 women arrived here from Dharmavaram to protest on Thursday night by sleeping in front of the Collector’s office, seeking fair compensation for land acquired for construction of houses under the NTR Housing scheme.

About 210 acres was acquired from 96 families for the construction of 18,000 houses at Tumparthi and Motumarla villages about four months ago, said Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary Inthiyaz.

‘Unfair deal’

Dharmavaram MLA Gonuguntla Suryanarayana had promised Scheduled Caste (SC) landholders three acres land as compensation, but nothing had been allotted until now, he claimed. Moreover, the government was offering only ₹5 lakh an acre as compensation, he said, adding “The MLA purchased land in the area recently at ₹30 lakh an acre, but was not negotiating with the government for fair compensation under Land Acquisition Act,2013, for those who have lost land.”
