Sitting BJP MPs likely to be renominated

Party to finalise its candidates after nod from Delhi

The BJP is likely to renominate K. Haribabu and Gokaraju Gangaraju as its candidates for the Visakhapatnam and Narsapuram Lok Sabha constituencies unless they opt out of the race. They had defeated YSRCP candidates Y.S. Vijayamma and Vanka Ravindranath respectively with handsome margins in 2014 with the support of their alliance partner, the TDP.

Purandeswari’s request

BJP is reportedly examining D. Purandeswari’s request to give her Ongole Lok Sabha ticket instead of Rajampet, where she had unsuccessfully contested against YSRCP’s P.V. Midhun Reddy.

BJP national secretary Y. Satya Kumar is said to have staked claim to Rajampet Lok Sabha constituency and the party is scouting for a candidate for Tirupati Lok Sabha seat, which was won last time by YSRCPs V. Vara Prasada Rao.

The party is likely to finalise its candidates for most of the 25 LS and 175 Assembly constituencies in a couple of days after high-level deliberations in New Delhi.

A BJP spokesman told The Hindu that the party had no dearth of aspirants, but some of them would be certainly weak in the sense that they would be no match to the candidates of other parties who had strong financial muscle.

Campaign strategy

Meanwhile, the BJP is preparing for a high-voltage campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top leaders after completing the selection of candidates. There is speculation that a few former Congress stalwarts in Rayalaseema are keen on joining the saffron party.

Mr. Modi may tentatively address public meetings in Tirupati, Vizianagaram and Kurnool to reach out to the electorate in both the coastal and Rayalaseema regions.

A decision in this regard is set to be taken soon paving the way for Mr. Modi and party president Amit Shah and other top leaders to launch the campaign in right earnest as the election notification is just five days away and the last date for filing of nominations is March 25.

The party is going to concentrate on the hand-holding it claimed to have extended to the State post bifurcation, failures of the TDP government and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s ‘U-turns’ on various issues, mainly Special Category Status (SCS).
