In a major haul, the Commissioner's Task Force personnel on Saturday busted a silver smuggling racket and arrested three persons belonging to Tamil Nadu.
The suspects, Dhanasekharan Kartikeyan, Tiruvenkatam Madan and Chandaswamy Suguneswar, all natives of Salem, were allegedly smuggling silver to Andhra Pradesh without any bills or documents.
On a tip-off, the team led by task force Assistant Commissioner K. Suryachandar Rao intercepted their car on the National Highway, at Krishnalanka, and seized silver ornaments, weighing about 138 kg, valued ₹52.44 lakh.
Police also recovered ₹3.65 lakh cash, three mobile phones and the vehicle used for the offence. The gang were evading all taxes to the government and were involved in smuggling the ornaments, said Police Commissioner Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao. Information would be sent to Commercial Tax and other officials concerned. Police are trying to trace the local traders who placed the orders for the silver ornaments.
