An Additional Superintendent of Police was arrested on Monday on charges of criminal conspiracy in the sensational Navjeevan Express train dacoity case in which jewellers were robbed of valuables worth Rs. 90 lakh last month.
Samay Jan Rao was serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Markapuram in Prakasam district.
He was produced before the First Class Additional Judicial Magistrate of Kavali for remand.
Nellore Superintendent of Police Mr. Gajarao Bhupal said there was material evidence against the officer in the jewellery heist. The arrest was made when the accused officer came to Nellore to attend a meeting.
The train dacoity took place on May 14. Four persons, declaring themselves as policemen, ordered the jewellers off the train, saying they were being summoned for an inquiry.
Along the way, they snatched jewellery worth nearly Rs. 90 lakh from them. After being robbed, the jewellers complained to the Kavali rural police who arrested the four gangsters at Kanigiri in Prakasam district after a chase.
