Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has said that his government had finalised a whopping Rs.3,000 crore plan to upgrade the amenities in the government schools. He claimed that that the funds earmarked to the sector was double the amount spent during the last fiscal.

Addressing a public meeting at Chandragiri on Monday near here after formally inaugurating the ‘Education Fortnight’ celebrations, the Chief Minister unveiled his government’s road-map for the implementation of the multi-crore plan. Of the total plan outlay of Rs.3,000 crore, Rs.2,400 crore would go towards improving the infrastructure and basic amenities in 500 schools. A substantial amount would go towards the construction of a girls hostel each at an estimated cost of Rs.1.28 crore, Rs.700 crore for construction of 13,000 additional classrooms this year itself, Rs.40 crore for construction of compound walls and a sizeable money for toilets in the schools. A target of 50,000 units is set for the present phase.

A compulsory sports period in schools and a sports stadium each in all the mandals at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore, introduction of computer facility in all villages, addressing the problem of teacher/staff shortage were some of the other sops Mr. Reddy showered on the school education sector.
