RINL effects major change in recruitment policy

To consider GATE, UGC-NET score for executive trainees

In a significant decision, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has decided to fill Management Trainees posts by considering their score in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) instead of a written test.

RINL used to recruit induction level posts in executive cadre by issuing a notification through an open advertisement as well as campus selections for recruitment of MTs.

The written test for MT was held on June 25, 2017 at 121 centres in seven cities wherein around 72,000 candidates had appeared. The test was cancelled following certain discrepancies adversely tarnishing the brand image of the company. This subsequently led to introduction of reforms in recruitment policy.

After the cancellation of the test, an online exam was conducted at a short notice by engaging a reputed external agency. Accordingly, IBPS was given the assignment of holding the online test for the first time in RINL history for recruitment of MTs.

After the test, interviews were conducted among short-listed candidates in Delhi, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. This was a departure from earlier practice of only one centre here. The selected candidates were inducted into RINL on February 17.

Digital mode

Now the management has decided to adopt digital mode for recruitment and selection process for various category of posts. It has also been decided to reduce the lead time taken for recruitment. Accordingly, it has been decided to dispense with written/online test at RINL level by adopting the score of more reliable and well-tested mechanism of GATE for recruitment of MT (Technical) from 2018. This practice is followed by most of the maharatna and navratna companies.

A RINL official told The Hindu that in line of system adopted by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. to induct fresh professionals in HR and marketing disciplines, UGC-NET score will be considered.

For (MT (finance), RINL will continue campus interview process by visiting various centres of ICAI.
