Gaiety marked the annual ‘Utlotsavam’ organised at the famous hill temple of Lord Venkateswara on the succeeding day of the auspicious Sri Krishna Janmastami festival on Monday.

Hundreds of enthusiastic youth took part in the religious sport which is organised on the similar lines of ‘Dahi Handi’ in the northern states particularly in Maharashtra.

The processional deity of Lord Sri Krishna was taken out in a grand procession around the mada streets of the temple town while hundreds of local youth in their sopping apparels marched ahead of the procession.

The teenagers in all their resplendent youth bounced and danced on the streets, pumped their fists in the air and shouted ‘Govinda’ ‘Govinda’ while the winners group marched ahead carrying the prize bags they had won at various points over their heads with pride.

The water sport was fought fiercely between the youth particularly at a venue in front of the main temple complex.

A long wooden pole was erected high with a ‘prize bag’ tied to its crest. The paunchy pole was thoroughly smeared with gummy components, lubricating oils, soft clay, and flour among other things.

The youth formally divided themselves into two groups. While one group that won the toss ventured in scaling the pole by building pyramids around it the other relentlessly splashed turmeric mixed water on their faces and foiled their attempts of reaching to the prize bag.

It was a sheer show of masculinity as both the groups ventured in turns.

Devotees who had assembled in large numbers went into peels of laughter each time the group which formed human pyramids around the sebaceous pole came crashing down on to the ground. The event went on till the seizure of the prize bag by a group.

The religious event that concluded by evening was also observed at Pedda Jeeyangara mutt, Chinna Jeeyangar mutt, Karnataka charities and at Lord Hayagreeva Swamy temple.
