Keeping the tradition alive: Members of Kerala Samajam participating in Onam festival in Tirupati on Sunday.

Though it has been over a month since the Onam festivities have ended, the Malayali community in the temple city, under the aegis of Kerala Samajam, converged to relive the festival here on Sunday.

The day-long celebrations turned colourful as more than 400 members, dressed in traditional attire, from in and around Tirupati took part.

Sadya

The participants had the opportunity to take part in the traditional ‘Pookalam’ and indulge themselves by feasting on ‘Onam Sadya’, specially prepared by cooks from Kerala.

Speaking to The Hindu , Kerala Samajam Secretary K.K. Muralidharan said the annual event would not only promote a sense of belonging but also enable the Malayali community to come together for celebrating Onam, as many of them had missed during the actual festival.

The festive mood was accentuated by an array of cultural events, said Mr. Muralidharan.

Mahabali’s homecoming

The highlight of the event was the performance by the Singari Melam and the enactment of King Mahabali's homecoming, which is the main theme of the belated festivities.

Kerala Samajam President P. Narayanan and others were present.
